Gauff and James to Carry the Flag

X and Facebook (those are the only social sites I use) were fired up over LeBron James carrying the flag for the USA in the upcoming Olympic Games. Predominantly because a portion of sports fans accuse James of hating America (which I don't believe is true).

Now, Coco Gauff will join him in carrying the American flag in the opening ceremonies of the Summer Olympics on Friday in Paris. Rest easy folks, I have never heard anyone claim Coco hates anything, let alone America.

The 20-year-old tennis star becomes the youngest American to serve as a flag bearer. Earlier this week, 39-year-old James was chosen to be part of the male-female duo. Gauff was voted by U.S. Olympic team members to lead the United States group in the special ceremony.

Unlike tradition, athletes will not be introduced in a stadium entrance. Instead, the Olympians will participate in a parade of nations by riding in boats down the Seine River.

Gauff learned of the honor Wednesday morning. While James is making his fourth appearance in the Olympics, this is Gauff's first experience.

"I never thought in a million years I would have the honor of carrying the American flag for Team USA," Gauff said in a statement. "I could not be more proud to lead my teammates with LeBron as we showcase our dedication and passion on the biggest stage there is -- at a moment where we can bring athletes and fans together from around the world."

The No. 2 player in the world, Gauff lost to No. 1 Iga Swiatek of Poland in the semifinals at the French Open in June. The Olympic tournament also will be played on the clay courts at Roland Garros in Paris.
