The Roar of '24 is Heading to October! The Detroit Tigers Sprint to the MLB Playoffs with an Improbable Run!
You say there is a chance?
The trade deadline came and went, and the fans of the Detroit Tigers had pretty much turned their attention to training camp for the Detroit Lions. Full disclosure, this Detroit Tigers fan did. They traded one of their top rotational players in Jack Flaherty for a slew of minor leaguers and "the future." Who knew the future would be now? I did keep track of the standings of The American League and MLB. I remember stating on my Captain Lou Extravaganza show, that you can hear on Wednesday nights live on https://12ozsports.com/, that it would take a run of epic proportions, and that is exactly what it took.
There is no way they can do it, can they?
On August 22nd, The Tigers were beaten soundly by the Chicago Cubs, 10-2. They were 62-66. We here in Detroit were stil reveling in a pre season victory for the Detroit Lions over Kansas City, talking how we have their number. The focus and the buzz was square on not getting an NFL Wildcard spot, but the number one seed. There was no focus on getting an MLB American League wildcard spot. Oh my how that has changed!
Happy birthday to me!
On my birthday, September 5th, The Tigers were back to .500. 70-70. They were in San Diego finishing up a three game series. They had blown a lead in the ninth inning the day before to go back to .500. Trailing in the top of the ninth with two outs, they had the bases loaded. Parker Meadows stepped up and said "HAPPY BIRTHDAY CAPTAIN LOU!" and deposited a grand slam to give the Tigers an improbable win over a team that many think could make some serious noise in the NL Playoffs. You are thinking ok, over .500 in September, this is something we haven't seen a few years. I think I can get into this.
There were no black cats in Comerica Park!
Friday the 13th, you are thinking, "OK, what if, just what if, the Tigers can take two out of three from the mighty Baltimore Orioles. A team that was pegged to potentially win the whole thing at the beginning of the year. A team fighting with the New York Yankees for the best record in baseball. Is that too much to ask? There is no way, right? Well, what do you know? They indeed got the two out of three and you are thinking, if only Minnesota could come back to us just a bit. Or potentially Kansas City. Oh wait, a trio to Kansas City.
I think this is going to happen!
It wouldn't be too much to ask to win 5 out of 6 on the last road trip of the year against two playoff teams, would it? A team we are chasing in Kansas City, and a team in Baltimore that no doubt is feeling a little surly after what Detroit did to them just a week ago? Heck no it's not too much to ask.
A magic number of 6 going into the last week of the season. Maybe we can get some help from the Miami Marlins who played Minnesota. Detroit played Tampa. If Detroit wins 4 out of 6, and Minnesota can stub ther toe, wow. maybe. Well, Detroit swept Tampa. That's three. Minnesota had the bases loaded in the 11th in their series finale with Miami. Came back from a 5-0 lead to tie it. Couldn't finish it. Miami won 8-6. So the magic number was one. And all Detroit needed to do was win one against the White Sox, and send them to the worst record of all time. How ironic, and that is what they did!
You can call them playoff bound Detroit Tigers
The Tigers now await their opponent. As of this morning, Saturday it would be Baltimore. But it could be Houston. But it doesn't matter. The Tigers are in. They are playing on house money. We talked on the show about the possibility of all four Detroit professional teams are going to be playing in October. That meant Detroit would accomplish a miracle comeback. A run for the ages. And they did just that!
55-63 on August 10th. Almost 9 games back of the wildcard. There is no way they could do this. This isn't really a possibility, is it? October baseball is here. No stopping us now. "The Roar of '24" is here! Let's enjoy the run!
