Jay Cutler arrested

Former Bears QB charged with DUI, gun possession in Tennessee

Former Bears quarterback Jay Cutler has largely stayed out of the spotlight since finalizing his divorce from reality star Kristin Cavallari in 2022. However, he recently found himself in legal trouble.

On Thursday, Cutler was arrested for DUI and three additional charges in Tennessee. He posted bond and was released from jail later that night.

The 41-year-old played 12 seasons in the NFL, earning a Pro Bowl selection with the Broncos in 2008, but he is best known for his eight years with the Bears. After initially retiring following the 2016 season, he returned to the field for one final year with the Dolphins in 2017, stepping in when Ryan Tannehill suffered a season-ending injury.

Here's a look at what led to Cutler's arrest and his four charges.

Cutler was arrested and charged with DUI, possession of a firearm while under the influence, failure to exercise due care, and violation of the implied consent law in Franklin, Tennessee, on Thursday, according to TMZ. He was jailed and later released after posting a $5,000 bond the same night.

Details about the specific actions that led to Cutler's arrest are not publicly available at this time. However, the charge of violating the implied consent law suggests that he may have refused a breathalyzer test or a similar measure before his arrest.

Jay Cutler spent the majority of his playing career in Chicago, but he began his journey at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, where he also got married. Franklin, where he lived, is about 20 miles south of downtown Nashville.

Initially, Cutler intended to pursue a career in broadcasting after football, but he has led a relatively quiet life post-NFL, apart from a highly publicized divorce from Kristin Cavallari. In 2023, he appeared as a panelist on The CW's "Inside the NFL," but he did not return for the following season.

Cutler's only known legal issue before Thursday occurred during his time at Vanderbilt. In 2002, he pleaded guilty to evading arrest after allegedly vandalizing an emergency phone on campus. He faced four charges due to the incident, but three were dropped as part of a plea deal. As a result, he was briefly suspended from the Commodores.

Despite a tumultuous tenure with the Bears, Cutler remains their all-time leader in passing yards and touchdown passes. He finished with a record of 51 wins and 51 losses while leading Chicago to the NFC Championship game in 2010; however, he did not return to the playoffs during his last six seasons with the team.
